Children Evaluation

Evaluation is the process for determining whether a child has a disability and needs special education and related services. It’s the first step in developing an educational program that will help the child learn. A full and individual initial evaluation must be done before the initial provision of any special education or related services to a child with a disability, and students must be reevaluated at least once every three years.

Evaluation involves gathering information from a variety of sources about a child’s functioning and development in all areas of suspected disability, including information provided by the parent. The evaluation may look at cognitive, behavioral, physical, and developmental factors, as well as other areas. All this information is used to determine the child’s educational needs.

Below is a quick check to identify whether your child is having any abnormal development:

  Difficulty paying attention to details
  Always make careless mistakes in school or other activities
  Producing work that is often messy and careless
  Easily distracted by irrelevant stimuli
  Inability to sustain attention on tasks or activities
  Difficulty finishing schoolwork or paperwork or performing tasks that require concentration
  Frequent shifts from one uncompleted activity to another
  Procrastination
  Disorganized work habits
  Always on a move
  Running or climbing excessively when it's inappropriate (in teens this may appear as restlessness)
  Having difficulty playing quietly or engaging in quiet leisure activities
  Often talking excessively

Sensory Integration Training

Sensory integration is the neurological process of organizing the information we get from our bodies and from the world around us for use in daily life. Our senses including senses of hearing, seeing, taste, smell and touch receive information from stimuli both outside and inside our bodies. While our vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile senses are the three body-centered sensory systems that provide the sense of oneself in the world. To enable us to respond appropriately, all the senses must work together. Sensory integration is the foundation of all the learning, it provide foundation for more complex and crucial learning in later stage of child’s life.

For most children, sensory integration develops in the course of ordinary childhood activities. The organization of behavior, learning and performance is a natural outcome of the process. But for some children, sensory integration does not develop as efficiently as it should. When the process is disorder, a number of problems in learning, development and/or behavior may become evident to families.
